The University of Lethbridge has claimed a top-three position in the Maclean's Magazine ranking of Canadian Universities, reflecting the U of L's confirmed strength in a number of other polls and rankings released earlier this year.
The U of L achieved its highest ranking with Maclean¹s since the primarily undergraduate category was established in 1992, moving to third overall in the classification. Maclean's praise of the University reflects the recent accolades the U of L received from Research Infosource, which named the school the Research University of the Year 2012 (undergraduate category), as well as the Globe and Mail's University Report Card.
"This ranking is a tremendous credit to the faculty, staff and students who comprise our University community across all three of our campuses," says Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Dr. Andrew Hakin. "The majority of our students, greater than 70 per cent, come to our University from outside the southern Alberta area, and the reasons they choose the U of L as their destination university are reflected in these rankings and speak to the educational experience they enjoy."
The U of L achieved its largest ranking gains from a rise in the percentage of overall budget spent on student services, library expenses, and the reputational survey and student awards indicators. Of the 14 indicators used by Maclean's to construct its rankings, the University gained in seven categories and remained the same in three others.
"The University continues to make student services a budgetary priority, because it speaks to our philosophy of creating a high quality and supportive atmosphere for students who choose to come to the U of L," says Hakin.
Maclean's refers to the U of L as "Alberta's rising research star" and noted its move to second overall in institutional reputation in its class.
"Our reputation for academic and research quality is increasingly known nationally, and it is evident in many of the indicators from this latest survey that our continued evolution as a comprehensive research university is being achieved while maintaining our student-centred philosophy," concludes Hakin.
